Fabric guide

Match the needle to the fabric before you touch the tension dial.

A lot of sewing machine needle chart problems are really fabric-match problems. The same 80/12 behaves differently in crisp shirting, soft rayon, ponte knit, and brushed denim.

Light and slippery fabrics

  • 60/8 or 70/10 for sheers, lining, and very fine fabrics
  • Microtex helps when a universal needle drags the weave
  • Use finer thread so the seam does not look punched out

Stable everyday fabrics

  • 80/12 is the normal starting point for cotton, poplin, and quilting fabric
  • 90/14 starts making more sense as layers and seam bulk increase
  • Switch families, not only sizes, when the fabric is knit

Knits and stretch

  • Ballpoint for gentler everyday knits
  • Stretch needles for athletic fabric, swim, and elastic seams
  • If stitches skip, try a new stretch needle before changing settings

Heavy fabrics

  • 90/14 or 100/16 for denim, canvas, and utility sewing
  • Jeans needles reduce deflection through stacked seams
  • Use slower speed and a seam jumper when the bulk gets abrupt
